Pytho - One of two early names for the site. Ancients played with its supposed etymological conection with puthein (to rot). The name can refer to the site of Delphi itself, or the local region in which it lay.
Python - One of two early names of the site: some connection with python (snake): might be connected with the appearance of the rock; the myth of Apollo slaying Python probably post-dates the name.
